Homemade Dried Fish Dog Treats... Why Not?Nimble with the trout I caught... There's so many different ways to make these delicious dog treats. They're easy to make, healthy, simple to store and inexpensive! Why wouldn't you make dried fish dog treats unless... You buy your fish from the market which adds to the cost. Luckily, I catch my own and have access to fresh fish from other fishermen around here.
Healthy Snacks for Dogs! The less you cook the more nutrition your dog gets. There's evidence that cooking has a few benefits not found in raw food... maybe and maybe not. I feed my dog lots of raw fish with her meals and the dog fish treats are sun-dried or cooked. I've never used a dehydrator but I've heard it works fine. Ditto with freeze dried dog treats. Yes, oily fish is very healthy. However... variety is better. I feed all types of fish.
Before You Begin Making Your Tasty Dog Treats...Stay far away from farm-raised. Organic can still be farm-raised. Only use wild fish. Only use very small fish (large fish may be contaminated). Fresh water or salt water species are ok Raw salmon, steelhead or other ocean-migrating fish in the Trout
Family are fine but do your Salmonella research first.
Making Dried Fish Dog TreatsBelow are the different types of fish dog treats I enjoy making for my doggie. You'll need to make the size compatible to the size of your dog... ...like I'm doing here for nimble Doggie... Oven bakedSpread the pieces out over a cookie sheet. Set the temp to a low heat. I like to “cook” them until dry and chewy. Thinly sliced is easier... Nimble Doggie doesn't care! I remove the bones before drying... something about “cooked bones” doesn't set right with me (and Nimble Doggie).
Sun-Dried Dog TreatsSame as above but I'll leave the bones this time. Again... thinly sliced is my choice for easy preparation. Crunchy Dog Meatballs - Bonus - Not DriedChop the fish up into pieces that'll fit into your meat grinder. Make big or little balls and freeze. Easy-peesy! I'm ready to freeze these delicacies for my companion... ![]() Storing Your Dog's TreasuresI use vacuum-sealed jars to store the meatballs in the freezer although your dog might eat them up before they'll freezer-burn! The dried fish treats can be left in the sun... they'll become tastier as they age!! Or... Store the same as the meatballs.
Dried Fish Dog Treats......aren't the only healthy homemade dog treats your furry pal will love... Here's more! Small fish like these that I caught from a pure stream (not farm-raised) are very nutritious and contamination free... Do you have a story/tip you'd like to share?
